Although the risk of heartworm in this area is low, we do recommend prevention. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes, so in Ontario we recommend monthly prevention from June to November each year. Animals travelling south of the border may require longer course of treatment.
What is important to note is that heartworm medications also treat/prevent common intestinal parasites which are a risk to your pet and can be potentially transmitted to people.
